How Top Hat Chimney Came to Coventry
We didn’t open a branch here because a spreadsheet said Coventry looked profitable. We came because Wendell Pike spent a winter fielding calls from homeowners in this part of Tolland County who were getting burned, sometimes literally, by work that was never actually done.
One call stuck with him. A woman off South Street had paid another company for a “full cleaning and inspection.” Her chimney still smoked. Wendell went out, ran the camera up, and found the flue had never been touched. The sweep she’d paid for had been a twenty-minute visit and an invoice. He cleaned it properly, showed her the before-and-after footage on his phone, and told her what she actually needed, which turned out to be a lot less than she’d been led to believe. She called him back the next autumn, and the autumn after that, and every autumn since. That’s the model. That’s why we’re here.
Top Hat Chimney had been doing this work since 1999, built on a simple idea: sweep the same chimneys every year, know them better than the people who own them, and tell the truth even when the truth costs you a job. Coventry deserved that. So we brought the brand here, built a local team that lives in the towns we serve, and got to work. Wendell still wears the top hat to the door. It’s the oldest good-luck figure in the trade, and around here, it’s also a promise: the person you see is the person who stands behind the work.
Wendell Pike’s Personal Connection to the Chimney Cleaning Trade
Wendell got into this work the way a lot of people get into a trade: he needed something fixed, couldn’t find anyone he trusted to fix it right, and started learning how to do it himself. Not because he wanted a career change. Because he was standing in his own living room staring at a chimney that wouldn’t draw, and the person on the phone couldn’t tell him why without charging him to come look.
That first fire season was a lesson in humility. Creosote doesn’t care how confident you are. He remembers the smell of a flue that hadn’t been properly cleaned in years, that sharp, acrid, almost burnt-bacon smell that means the glaze has set in and a brush won’t touch it. He remembers the weight of the soot when it comes down in sheets instead of dust. First-degree creosote is a brush job. Third-degree is a glaze. Catch it early. That’s not a slogan. That’s the difference between a hundred-dollar sweep and a liner job, and Wendell learned it by seeing what happens when people wait.
He worked alongside tradesmen who’d been at it longer than he’d been alive, watched how they read a chimney the way a mechanic reads an engine, and eventually found himself doing the same. The work became personal somewhere along the way. There’s a satisfaction in it that’s hard to explain: the moment the brush comes through and the flue finally breathes, the way a fire draws clean and strong the first night of the season. Wendell would tell you he does this because he likes fixing things that matter and because a chimney is one of the few parts of a house that can kill you silently if it’s ignored. He’d tell you he likes being the person who shows up before the problem becomes a headline.
If he weren’t doing this, he’d probably be working with his hands somewhere else, building or restoring something, because he’s never been built for a desk. But the chimneys found him, and after all these years, he’ll tell you he’s exactly where he belongs: twenty minutes from most of our customers, on his way to someone’s house, top hat on the seat beside him.
Meet Wendell Pike, Owner & Founder
Wendell Pike owns Top Hat Chimney’s Coventry branch and personally oversees every job that goes out under his name. He’s state-licensed, insured and bonded, and he’s spent years learning this trade the hard way: on ladders, on roofs, with a camera in one hand and a brush in the other. He’s not a franchise technician running a route. He’s the person whose name is on the truck, and he’s going to run into you at the hardware store on a Saturday, which is the oldest accountability mechanism there is.
The top hat isn’t a gimmick. The sweep in the top hat is the oldest good-luck figure in the trade, and Wendell actually wears one to the door. It’s a small thing, but it tells you something about how he works: he believes in the traditions of this trade, and he believes in showing up as himself. His commitment to you is simple. If he says your chimney needs work, he’ll show you the camera footage that proves it. If he says it doesn’t need doing yet, he’ll tell you that too, even though it costs him a job. That’s why the customers he started with are still calling him.
Our Promise to Coventry Homeowners
We live by five values, and we named them so you’d remember them. They spell L.O.C.A.L.
Local roots. We have an address in this county, not a call center three states away. When you call (860) 743-7732, a live coordinator answers and connects you with our local team.
On time. The window we give you is the window. If something slips, we call. You won’t be waiting around wondering if we’re coming.
Community first. We hire here, we buy here, and we sponsor the team here. We’re part of this place, and we act like it.
Accountable. Wendell puts his name on the work and answers for it. Ninety days in writing on every chimney job, and one call brings him back.
Loyal. We’d rather keep you for twenty years than win one big ticket. Every inspection ends with the camera footage and a plain-English verdict. We will tell you when your flue does not need doing, which costs us money and is why we still have the customers we started with.
Our Credentials
When you hire someone to work in your home, credentials aren’t paperwork. They’re the difference between a worker you can trust and a risk you didn’t sign up for. Here’s what we hold, and why it matters:
- State-licensed. Every pro working under our name is required to hold the license their state requires. It means they’ve met the standards to do this work safely and legally.
- Insured and bonded. Again, every pro working under our name is required to hold the insurance their state requires. If something goes wrong, you’re not left holding the bill.
- Years of local experience. Wendell has been doing this work long enough to have seen it all, and the team he’s built here knows these houses because they live near these houses.
- A reputation you can verify. Ask anyone on your street. The strongest marketing we have is the neighbor who’s been using us for a decade.
Each of these matters for the same reason: you’re letting someone into your home to work on a system that, if neglected, can cause a chimney fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. You should know who you’re dealing with, and we make it easy to find out.
Rooted in Coventry
We work in Coventry, Glastonbury, East Hartford, Manchester, Vernon, Mansfield, Windham, Willimantic, Rockville, Marlborough, Storrs, and Tolland. These are our towns. We shop at the same stores, drive the same roads, and sit in the same stands. When Wendell says he lives twenty minutes away, he means it, and that proximity is the whole point. Your flue doesn’t care how the fire looks. It cares how it breathes. And we’ll be here next autumn to make sure it still does.
