Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Coventry Owner’s Guide

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

The Gelco flue liner lineup is not one-size-fits-all, and that’s where a lot of Coventry homeowners get tripped up. If you can still read the oval Gelco tag riveted near the top of the liner, that will give you the diameter and the alloy. If the tag is gone, which is common, we measure the inside diameter with a caliper and check the wall thickness before we quote anything.

You do not have to buy another Gelco liner to replace a Gelco liner. Gelco is out of the liner business in the way they once were, so we often install a quality aftermarket equivalent in the same diameter and alloy, typically 316L stainless, which is what the original was. The aftermarket liner from DuraFlex or HeatShield will match the old Gelco’s performance as long as it’s installed to the right diameter for the appliance. Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

• The fireplace smokes back into the room on cold starts. A cracked liner cools the flue gases too fast, so you lose the draft that pulls smoke up and out. Coventry’s cold winter air makes this worse because the temperature difference between the fire and the outside air is so large.
• You find fine brown or black grit in the firebox. That’s not ash from the wood. It’s creosote flaking off the liner walls, and it usually means the liner surface has pitted enough that creosote is clinging to it instead of brushing clean.
• The flue smells sour or oily, especially in humid weather. Cracks let condensation soak into the creosote, and wet creosote stinks. You’ll notice it most after rain or on damp mornings out here.
• Rust streaks or water stains show up inside the fireplace or on the wall behind it. A failed liner lets water from the flue travel down the brick and into your home. By the time you see staining, the liner has been breached for a while.
• You hear a metallic popping or clicking as the chimney heats up. Sections of a separated liner expand and contract against each other. That popping is metal moving where it should not be moving.

The spread comes from three things: the diameter of the liner your appliance needs, the height of the flue (a single-story ranch costs less than a two-story colonial), and how much of the old liner has to be cut out in sections before the new one drops in. On the upper end, you are looking at a 7-inch or 8-inch liner, a taller chimney, or an old liner so badly warped that removal takes half the day.

You can check your liner from the firebox with a flashlight and a mirror. If you see cracks, rust, or sections that look pushed in or separated, that’s enough to call. What you should not do is try to pull a failed Gelco liner yourself. The liner is often cemented into the flue with high-temperature mortar, and it comes out in pieces that want to bind against the clay tile. If you yank from below and it lets go all at once, you are under a hundred pounds of steel with no good way to control it. We’ve seen the results of that experiment in other towns, and it usually ends with a hospital visit or a cracked flue tile you did not have before.
